Jeffrey S. Passel

Jeffrey S. Passel is the Senior Demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center in Washington, DC which he joined in January 2005.

His research interests include the demography of Hispanics and immigrants, integration of immigrants into American society, and the impacts (fiscal, demographic, and social) of immigrants. He has developed measures of immigration trends, especially the size of the undocumented, that are widely cited by both opponents and proponents of immigration. He also works on generational dynamics, population projections, defining racial/ethnic groups, and measuring census undercount. Previous positions include Principal Research Associate at the Urban Institute (1989-2005) and various positions at the Census Bureau (1974-1989) where he directed programs of population estimates, projections, and demographic methods for measuring census undercount.

Dr. Passel has served on committees of the Population Association of America, Panels of National Academy of Sciences, and on the Social Security Advisory Board's Technical Panel on Assumptions and Methods. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Statistical Association. In 2004, American Demographics magazine selected him as a "demographic diamond," one of the 5 demographers/social scientists most representative of influential work in the last 25 years. Dr. Passel has degrees from Johns Hopkins University (PhD), University of Texas at Austin (MA), and MIT (BS). He and his wife, Ellen, have lived in Arlington, Virginia since 1976.
