EEOC Sues Taprite Fassco for Sex and Disability Discrimination and Retaliation

Taprite Fassco Manufacturing, Inc., a San Antonio-based supplier of CO2 regulators in the soda and beer industries, violated several federal anti-discrimination laws in its treatment of one of its quality control inspectors, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.  The EEOC said the company subjected the woman to gender and disability discrimination and unlawfully retaliated against her for complaining.

EEOC Disability Case Against Sony to Proceed, Federal Judge Orders

U.S. District Judge James B. Zagel of the Northern District of Illinois has issued an order denying a motion by Sony for a pre-trial judgment in its favor in a discrimination case brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the agency announced today. (EEOC v. Staffmark Investment LLC and Sony Electronics, Inc, 12-CV-9628, N.D. Ill.). In its lawsuit filed Dec. 4, 2012, the EEOC charged that Sony violated the ADA when it terminated Dorothy Shanks, a temporary worker with a prosthetic leg who was assigned to inspect Sony televisions.

Holly Manor Center Nursing Home Pays $75,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit

A Mendham, N.J., nursing home will pay $75,000 and furnish significant equitable relief to resolve a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged Holly Manor Center Nursing Home with unlawfully rescinding a job offer to an applicant because he is deaf.

Judge Approves $2.4 Million EEOC Settlement with Four Hawaii Farms for over 500 Thai Farmworkers

U.S. District Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi in Hawaii has approved settlements between the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and four Hawaii farms totaling $2.4 million for about 500 Thai farmworker victims of national origin discrimination and retaliation, the EEOC announced today.  The settlement encompasses monetary relief, options for jobs and benefits, housing, other reimbursements of expenses, and sweeping injunctive relief remedies. The four farms are Mac Farms of Hawaii, LLC [nka MF Nut Co., LLC]; Kauai Coffee Company, Inc., [nka McBryde Resources, Inc.]; Kelena Farms, Inc. and Captain Cook Coffee Company, Ltd.

Popeye's Chicken Franchisee to Pay $25,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Lawsuit

Famous Chicken of Shreveport, L.L.C. a Popeye's Chicken franchisee, has agreed to pay $25,000 and provide other significant relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC charged the company with unlawfully denying employment to an HIV-positive applicant because of his disability at a Longview, Texas Popeye's location.

EEO-1 Survey Open for 2014

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has completed its mailing of the 2014 EEO-1 survey Notification Letters.  The EEO-1 is an annual survey that requires all private employers with 100 or more employees, and federal government contractors or first-tier subcontractors with 50 or more employees and a contract/subcontract of $50,000 or more to file the EEO-1 report.  The filing of the EEO-1 report is not voluntary, and is required by federal law.  The annual filing deadline is September 30, 2014.

President Appoints Jenny R. Yang EEOC Chair

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today announced that President Obama has named Vice Chair Jenny R. Yang as Chair of the EEOC.  Yang, whose term expires July 1, 2017, was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 25, 2013.  She has served as Vice Chair since April 2014.  Yang will be the first Asian-American Chair of the EEOC.

EEOC and Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sign National Memorandum of Understanding

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States signed a national Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today which is designed to further strengthen their collaborative efforts to provide immigrant, migrant and otherwise vulnerable Mexican workers and their employers with guidance and information and access to education about their rights and responsibilities under the laws enforced by the EEOC.
