Deborah Kane Chosen as New Director of EEOC’s Pittsburgh Area Office

PITTSBURGH – Deborah Kane has been chosen as the new area director of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Pittsburgh Area Office, the federal agency announced today. As the director of the EEOC Pittsburgh Area Office, Kane will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the office and supervising the office staff.

“I am very pleased that Deborah will be the director of our Pittsburgh Area Office,” said EEOC Philadelphia District Director Jamie R. Williamson. “In addition to her wealth of experience, both with the agency and in the private sector, she has a passion for civil rights and public service.”

Kane said, “I am honored to be selected. I look forward to continue working with our dedicated and talented staff in Pittsburgh, and the employer and employee communities, as we seek to prevent and remedy unlawful employment discrimination and advance equal opportunity for all in the workplace.”

Kane began her career with the EEOC in 2010 as a trial attorney. As a trial attorney and senior trial attorney, she litigated many significant cases and recovered millions of dollars on behalf of victims of discrimination. She was the lead attorney in EEOC v. Scott Medical Health Center in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania (Case 2:16-cv-00225-CB), which was one of the first EEOC lawsuits alleging that discrimination based on sexual orientation violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. From January to June 2020, she served as acting director of the Pittsburgh Area Office.

Kane regularly presents to employer groups, advocacy groups, non-profits and student organizations as part of the agency’s outreach and education program.

Kane received her undergraduate degree from Boston College and her law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. She is a certified mediator. Prior to coming to the EEOC, Kane was a partner in the law firm of Weber Gallagher Simpson Stapleton Fires & Newby, LLP in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Area Office is part of the EEOC's Philadelphia District, which covers all of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and parts of New Jersey and Ohio.
