Andrew F. Maunz Sworn in as EEOC Legal Counsel

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that Andrew F. Maunz has been sworn in as its legal counsel, overseeing internal and external policy for the nation's leading civil rights agency.

"I am thrilled that Drew will continue to lend his policy background and expertise to the EEOC in his new role as legal counsel," said EEOC Chair Janet Dhillon. "His experience in the area of employment law and background working at the EEOC will greatly benefit the agency as we continue to combat employment discrimination. Additionally, I would like to thank Ketan D. Bhirud for his service to the EEOC and we wish him the best as he begins his new role as deputy general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security."

The EEOC's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) serves as the principal advisor to the Commission on enforcement matters. OLC drafts regulations, guidance and technical assistance documents, conducts outreach and education efforts, and coordinates on behalf of the EEOC on all federal issues affecting equal employment opportunity. OLC also represents the Commission in defensive litigation and manages the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) program for the agency.

"During my time at the EEOC, I have been very impressed with the dedicated professionals that work in OLC," said Maunz. "It is an honor to serve in this role and I thank Chair Dhillon for the opportunity." 

Since July 2019, Maunz has worked at the EEOC as a special assistant to Chair Dhillon.  In this role, he has advised the Chair on legal and policy matters.  Immediately prior to joining the EEOC, he served as a senior attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the Social Security Administration.  At Social Security, he provided legal advice on employment and administrative law matters and represented the agency in litigation in federal courts and administrative proceedings.  Maunz attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio as an undergraduate and the University of Toledo College of Law on a full academic scholarship, graduating magna cum laude.
