Old Dominion Freight Line Sued By EEOC For Disability Discrimination

Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc., a trucking company with a service center in Fort Smith, Ark., violated federal law by discriminating against at least one truck driver because of self-reported alcohol abuse, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today. The company should have met its legal obligation to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act while assuring safety, rather than permanently sidelining self-reporting drivers, the EEOC contended.

In its lawsuit, the EEOC contended that Woodman's unlawfully fired employee because of her back condition.

One of the largest metropolitan Jewish community centers in the country will pay $100,000 and provide other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. The EEOC had charged that the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington (JCCGW) in Rockville, Md., violated the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) when it demoted and fired an assistant teacher because of her hearing impairment.

Telecommunications giant Verizon Communications will pay $20 million and provide significant equitable relief to resolve a nationwide class disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The suit, filed against 24 named subsidiaries of Verizon Communications, said the company unlawfully denied reasonable accommodations to hundreds of employees and disciplined and/or fired them pursuant to Verizon's "no fault" attendance plans.

Retaliation Remains Most Frequent Allegation Among Federal-Sector Discrimination Complaints

Federal employees and applicants filed 17,583 complaints of employment discrimination during fiscal year 2010, a 3.75 percent increase over the previous year, according to the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Annual Report on the Federal Work Force Part I: EEO Complaints Processing for Fiscal Year 2010.  The report, issued today, assesses federal agencies' equal employment opportunity complaints program statistics.  The full text of the report is available on the agency's web site at http://www.eeoc.gov/federal/reports/fsp2010/index.cfm.

Experts Give EEOC Range of Views on Leave as a Reasonable Accommodation

At a Commission meeting today, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) heard a range of views from a diverse panel of experts concerning the use of leave to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.  While the witnesses differed as to some employer and employee obligations, they agreed on the need for clear and uniform guidance from the EEOC.  The meeting, featuring representatives of employees and employers and EEOC officials, was designed to explore the use of leave.
