Next Commission Meeting Wednesday, April 25

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission  (EEOC) will hold a meeting on Wednesday, April 25, at 9:30 a.m. (Eastern Time),  at agency headquarters, 131 M Street, N.E. In accordance with the  Sunshine Act, the open session of the meeting will be open to public  observation of the Commission's deliberations and voting.

EEOC Wins Disability Discrimination Suit Against Payday Lender 'The Cash Store'

Today the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced a victory in one of its first disability discrimination lawsuits taken to trial concerning bipolar disorder. Following a four-day bench trial, a federal district court entered judgment for $56,500 against Irving, Tex.-based Cottonwood Financial. The court found that the company violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD) when it fired an employee from its Walla Walla, Wash., store.

GGNSC Charlotte Renaissance LLC, a Delaware corporation that operates Golden LivingCenter-Dartmouth in Charlotte, N.C., discriminated against an employee with a disability and then unlawfully fired her, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today. Golden Living operates a nursing facility that provides care to individuals who are ill, physically and mentally disabled, and elderly.

Family Video to Pay $70,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today filed a consent decree resolving a disability discrimination lawsuit brought against Family Video Movie Club, Inc., known as Family Video, a Glenview, Ill.-based retailer of movies and games.  Family Video is the largest privately-owned movie and game retailer in the United States and operates more than 735 Family Video stores in 19 states with more than 7,000 employees.

Tyson Foods, Inc., one of the world's largest processors of chicken, beef and pork, will pay $35,000 and furnish other relief to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Tyson Foods refused to hire a former employee because he had epilepsy.

Magnuson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
