Student Internships New York District Office

Internships are both in person and virtual. Students will be subject to normal Eastern Standard Time Zone work hours, regardless of their home or school location. During a semester, we prefer students who can commit a minimum of 10 hours per week. During the summer, we prefer students who can commit a minimum of 20-30 hours per week. Being outside of the New York City area is not a disqualifier for the Program. No funding is available for this Program. Students may receive credit, work study, a fellowship or pro bono hours from their school for their participation, arranged by the student and school.

Enforcement

Enforcement Unit -  is charged with the responsibility of conducting investigations on employment discrimination claims involving private sector and public sector non-federal entities:  Interns will be learning and be involved in all phases of the investigative process, including but not limited to: 1) interviewing parties and witnesses by phone and face-to-face to gather relevant evidence on all allegations of complaint; 2)  reviewing EEOC guidelines and applicable legal memoranda in the development of requests for information and documents;  3) observe and/or participate in on-site investigations; 4)  assist in the analysis of presented evidence and recommendations on the processing of the charge; 5)  submitting written analysis and recommendations regarding disposition of cases; and 6)  assist Enforcement staff with other collateral duties, as applicable.

Positions Available: A limited number of internships are available with the Enforcement Units in New York City; Buffalo, NY; Newark, NJ; and Boston, Massachusetts. Alternative Dispute Resolution

Mediation Unit - is charged with the responsibility of conducting mediations on employment discrimination claims involving private sector and public sector non-federal entities:  Persons selected for this internship should have taken one or more classes of Conflict Resolution, and or Employment/Labor Law.  Interns will be involved in all phases of mediation, from the development of mediation candidates, telephoning parties to explain the potential benefits of mediation, to the scheduling of mediations, and the observation and potential participation in actual mediations, as the parties attempt to resolve the dispute.  In doing so, interns are given the opportunity to get real life exposure to different mediators, attorneys and stakeholder explanations and emotions, approaches and styles of negotiation in the mediation context.

Judicial Program

Judicial Internship Program- affords law students the opportunity to work with the Administrative Judges and learn about employment discrimination as well as evidentiary, procedural, and federal sector administrative law issues.  Interns are directly involved with the cases and participate in a full array of legal assignments, including any the following: read files and summarize the evidence gathered during the investigative process; identify information necessary for the Judge to develop the record; assist the Judge in determining the issues to be heard, documents to be admitted and witnesses to be approved to testify; observe conferences and hearings conducted by the Judges; assist in the resolution of discovery disputes; and research and draft orders for dispositive motions, including summary judgment, and post-hearing decisions.

Positions Available:  All New York District Office Hearings internships will be fully virtual as such. Students will work with the Judges online through our secure network using applications provided by the EEOC. Outreach 

Outreach and Training - Depending on background and experience, interns will assist the Outreach and Training Coordinator with various projects to include, without limitation, reviewing, developing and assembling training materials; entering, tracking and preparing reports on outreach events conducted across the district; and designing/editing and collaborating about outreach and training publications, manuals, etc.  Applicants should have an interest in public policy, strong Microsoft Office experience, and creative design experience related to brochures and other printed materials, good writing, communication and organization skills. 

Positions Available: A limited number of internships are available with the Outreach Unit.
