Maryann Parker

Associate General Counsel, Service Employees International Union

Meeting of February 15, 2012 - Unlawful Discrimination Against Pregnant Workers and Workers with Caregiving Responsibilities

Maryann Parker is Associate General Counsel at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and since 2009 has served as lead counsel to the Public Services Division of SEIU. Her work supports organizing campaigns involving public employees, early care and education workers, and other human services providers. For over six years, Maryann has worked to expand SEIU's successful model for organizing home-based family child care providers by drafting memoranda, model legislation and executive orders, providing expert testimony, and filing briefs in litigation concerning the organizing model. In the past two years, she has helped the Division organize many thousands of low-wage workers employed by publicly-funded, private-sector providers of mental health and developmental disability services. Maryann also counsels SEIU on its State Attorneys General Program, and on issues including international labor law, voter protection, and work-family initiatives.

Prior to joining SEIU in 2005, Maryann was an associate with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Bredhoff & Kaiser. In her practice at Bredhoff, Maryann represented labor unions in matters including a class action to enforce collectively-bargained retiree health benefits and successful challenges to school voucher programs in Colorado and Florida. Maryann served as law clerk to the Honorable Anita B. Brody in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania after graduating law school.

Maryann earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School and a M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton in 2000. From 1993 to 1996, she worked for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in both Washington, D.C. and Moscow, Russia, where she was Assistant Director for Program Coordination at the Carnegie Moscow Center. Maryann is a 1993 graduate of Yale College.
