EEOC Sues FCA US LLC for Sexual Harassment

Federal Agency Charges Automaker Routinely Ignored Sexual Harassment Complaints, Compelling One Female Employee to Resign

DETROIT – FCA US, L.L.C., an international automobile manufacturer, violated federal law when it subjected female production employees to widespread sexual harassment, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.

According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, female employees at FCA’s Detroit Assembly Complex were sexually harassed by male supervisors and co-workers. The harassing conduct included sexually explicit comments and inappropriate touching, and because some of the women complained to FCA, the company was aware of the harassment. FCA failed to act in response to some complaints or responded in an untimely or negligent manner to other complaints, including by failing to discipline the harassers. The sexually hostile work environment caused one of the women to resign, the EEOC said.

Such alleged conduct violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sexual harassment. The EEOC filed suit (EEOC v. FCA US, LLC, Case No. 2:25-cv-10174) in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its administrative conciliation process.

“Employers cannot normalize offensive sex-based misconduct,” said EEOC Trial Attorney Karen Brooks. “Such behavior must be as unacceptable in an automobile plant as anywhere else. By tolerating known sexual harassment, employers violate federal law.”

EEOC Assistant Regional Attorney Omar Weaver said, “The EEOC will act to vindicate the rights of female employees who were forced to accept continued harassment. This agency takes allegations of harassment very seriously and is committed to pursuing remedial changes to the work environment and appropriate relief for those who endured harassment because of their sex.”

Women who believe they may have been sexually harassed at FCA’s Detroit Assembly Complex and individuals who may have information that would be helpful to the EEOC’s suit against FCA should contact the EEOC at 313-774-0062 or by e-mail at FCAMackLawsuit@eeoc.gov.
