EEOC Sues Osceola Community Hospital for Disability Discrimination

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a disability discrimination lawsuit this week against Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.  The agency alleged that Bright Beginnings of Osceola County, a day care center operated by the hospital, unlawfully failed to hire a woman because of her cerebral palsy.

The Braun Electric Company violated federal law when it allowed the unwelcome sexual harassment and discrimination of a class of female employees, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed yesterday.  The Bakersfield, Calif.-based company provides electrical services for the oil and gas industry throughout California's San Joaquin Valley.

Mount Vernon Mills, Inc., a Greenville, S.C., textile company with a cotton mill in Cuero, Texas, will pay $70,000 and furnish other relief to settle a sexual harass­ment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.

Repeal of Local EEO Ordinance Will Not Affect Employment Discrimination Filings with EEOC

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that it has implemented a new plan to accept and investigate claims of employment discrimination brought in Lee County, Fla.  The EEOC's announcement comes after the Lee County Board of County Commissioners repealed its local EEO ordinance by a vote of 4 to 1.  As a result of the Board of Commissioners vote, the Lee County Office of Equal Opportunity notified the EEOC that it will no longer conduct intake of employment discrimination complaints under a work sharing agreement with the EEOC, and will soon no longer investigate such complaints.

Sneakers, Inc. is a Georgia corporation operating athletic specialty retail stores in Georgia and Alabama.

Performance Drilling to Pay $28,000 to Settle Race Discrimination Lawsuit with EEOC

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced today that it settled, for $28,000 and other relief, a race discrimination lawsuit against Performance Drilling Company LLC. Brandon, Miss.-based Performance Drilling provides land drilling services for natural gas and oil exploration and production companies in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida and East Texas. Prior to settlement, Performance Drilling filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

EEOC Sues Dollar General for Race Discrimination and Retaliation

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEOC) announced today that it has filed a lawsuit for race discrimination and retaliation against Dollar General Corporation, asserting that it violated federal law when it denied a black lead sales associate in a Long Beach, Miss., store a promotion to a vacant assistant store manager position because of her race. The EEOC said the store also retaliated against her for complaining, and filing a charge of discrimination with the EEOC.

Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center, Inc. (BEW Center) violated federal law by failing to accommodate and then firing an employee with a mental health disability, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed yesterday. BEW Center is a health center located in Chicago that provides services to persons with mental health, behavioral, emotional, and substance abuse problems.

The MBM Corporation's food distribution facility in Mason City, Iowa, one of many operated by the company, violated the law when company officials failed to remove racist graffiti from the men's room even after receiving a complaint, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed in federal court on Sept. 25. Sandia Drilling Sued by EEOC for Race Harassment and Retaliation

Sandia Drilling Company, Ltd, L.L.P. and Sandia Drilling of Texas, L.L.C., Bossier City, La., oil drilling companies, violated federal anti-discrimination laws when their supervisors and other employees subjected two African-American and a Hispanic worker to a racially hostile work environment, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.  The companies also fired one discrimination victim in retaliation for complaining, the agency said.
