EEOC, Ecuador Sign Partnership Agreement

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Republic of Ecuador today committed to work together to combat employment discrimination. In a ceremony at EEOC's Washington, D.C. headquarters, EEOC Chair Jenny R. Yang and Ecuadorian Ambassador Francisco Borja Cevallos signed a national Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) creating a partnership between local consulates and EEOC field offices nationwide.

EEOC Joins Office of U.S. Attorney,  Bar Association and U.S. District Court in  Continuing Legal Education Seminar

The Memphis District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will join several other government and educational entities in a continuing legal education seminar (CLE) on Nov. 12 at the National Civil Rights Museum, the federal agency announced today. The CLE is titled Journey to Justice: The Role of Law in Affecting Social Change as Examined Through the Legacy of Constance Baker Motley, Advocate and Jurist.

Workplace Staffing Solutions, L.L.C., a Louisiana company operating an office in Gulfport, Miss., violated federal law by failing to hire at least 34 qualified women for temporary residential trashcan collector (RTCC) positions in Harrison County, Miss., because of their sex, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed on Oct. 26.

EEOC Issues Proposed Rule to Amend Title II of GINA

On Friday, October 30, 2015, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to amend the regulations implementing Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) as they relate to employer wellness programs that are part of group health plans. The proposed rule would allow employers who offer wellness programs as part of group health plans to provide limited financial and other inducements (also called incentives) in exchange for an employee's spouse providing information about his or her current or past health status. EEOC will accept comments on the proposed rule through Tuesday, December 29, 2015.

Jury Awards $240,000 to Muslim Truck Drivers In  EEOC Religious Discrimination Suit

A federal jury in Peoria, Ill., has awarded $240,000 to two Somalian-American Muslims who were fired from their jobs as truck drivers at Star Transport, an over-the-road trucking company, when they refused to transport alcohol because it violated their religious beliefs, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which brought the case.  The trial started on Oct. 19, and the jury returned its verdict the next day after 45 minutes of deliberation.

U.S. EEOC Harassment Task Force to Host Public Meeting, First In Los Angeles

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's (EEOC) Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace, led by EEOC Commissioners Chai Feldblum and Victoria Lipnic, will meet publicly in Los Angeles on Oct. 22. The task force examines the problem of harassment in the workplace and seeks to identify new and creative ways by which it might be prevented and eliminated. Roberta L. Steele Appointed Regional Attorney for EEOC San Francisco District Office

Roberta L. Steele has been appointed as Regional Attorney for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) San Francisco District Office effective Nov. 2, 2015. Throughout her legal career, Steele has worked exclusively as a plaintiffs' attorney, with a significant practice in the area of employment discrimination law. For 17 years, Steele worked with a plaintiffs' firm in Oakland, California, focusing on investigating and litigating class and collective actions under federal and state employment discrimination laws, as well as other statutes such as the wage and hour and environmental laws. Since December 2013, Steele has been the Program Director at the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) where she is responsible for the coordination of NELA's amicus, judicial nominations and continuing legal education programs, and public policy work.
