Bayview Nonprofit Sued For National Origin and Pregnancy Discrimination

A Bayview Hunters Point nonprofit violated federal law when it failed to promote and instead terminated an employee because of her Samoan national origin and her pregnancy, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.

Jerseyville Elks Lodge Settles EEOC Sexual Harassment and Retaliation Lawsuit

Elks Lodge No. 954 in Jerseyville, Ill., will pay $107,500 and furnish other relief to settle a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. The EEOC had charged that the lodge violated federal law by sexually harassing three female bartenders and then taking reprisals against them when they complained.

Terminix Agrees to Pay $80,000 to Settle EEOC Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit

Major exterminator Terminix International will pay $80,000 to settle a sex discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Terminix unlawfully fired an employee at its McGehee, Ark., location because of her pregnancy.

EEOC Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary

July 2, 2010, marks the 45th anniversary of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Created by the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964, the EEOC was founded to enforce Title VII of that Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. On July 22, 2010 the EEOC will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which expanded employment opportunities for physically, emotionally and mentally disabled people.

Sioux Falls Oral Surgery Clinic Pays $118,775 to Settle EEOC Pregnancy Discrimination Case

Siouxland Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, LLP of Sioux Falls, S.D., has agreed to pay $95,000 in punitive damages and attorneys' fees, in addition to $23,775 paid earlier this year for lost earnings and interest, to resolve a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on behalf of two pregnant women discriminated against in 2002, the agency announced today.  Siouxland is a medical clinic in Sioux Falls that specializes in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Hilton Grand Vacations Settles EEOC Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit

Hilton Grand Vacations Company, LLC, an Orlando, Fla.-based resort corporation, has agreed to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today. The EEOC had charged that Hilton Grand Vacations violated federal law when it persuaded an employee to resign her position because of her pregnancy by falsely promising to rehire her after the birth of her child.

Two Dallas/Fort Worth-area transportation brokerage companies will pay $50,000 and provide additional remedial relief to settle a discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The EEOC had charged that Joshua Male's employer unlawfully retaliated against him by firing him because he had complained about workplace comments being made by two coworkers at the Sugar Land, Texas facility where they worked.

Jacqueline A. Berrien Becomes Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Jacqueline A. Berrien, the former Associate Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF), was sworn in today as the Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)  by Acting Chairman Stuart J. Ishimaru. She becomes the fourteenth Chair of the EEOC, which will celebrate the 45th anniversary of its founding in July.

Greenforest-McCalep Christian Academic Center, a subsidiary of Greenforest Community Baptist Church, will pay $53,000 and furnish other relief to settle two pregnancy discrimination lawsuits brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.  The agency had charged that the Decatur, Ga., Christian school violated federal law when it fired one employee and rescinded a job offer to an applicant after it became aware they were pregnant.

White Way Cleaners to Pay $42,250 to Settle EEOC Pregnancy Discrimination Suit

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today announced that Chief Judge Michael J. Davis of U.S. District Court in Minneapolis has approved a consent decree settling a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by the EEOC against White Way Cleaners for $42,250 and other relief.  White Way is a dry cleaning company located in St. Paul, with store locations in Minneapolis and St. Paul as well as pick-up and delivery service to the Twin Cities suburbs.

U.S. Security Associates, Inc. will pay $79,880 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency announced today.   The EEOC had charged the Roswell, Ga.-based security company with unlawfully subjecting a security guard to pregnancy discrimination and then firing her in retaliation for complaining about it – in addition to firing her husband, a coworker, for supporting her in the matter.
