EEOC Sues Peters' Bakery for National Origin Harassment and Retaliation

Peters' Bakery, a family-owned business in East San Jose, violated federal law when the principal owner verbally abused an employee using ethnic and racial slurs, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.  Additionally, the EEOC said Peters' Bakery retaliated against the employee by suing her in small claims court for defamation after she filed a discrimination charge with the EEOC.

The Food Farmacy, Ltd. and J&T Enterprises, LLC, doing business as Foodworks, a chain of grocery stores in Connecticut, violated federal law when they asked applicants disability-related questions and fired an employee from their store in Monroe, Conn., because of the employee's epilepsy, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit filed today.

Z Foods, Inc., doing business as Zoria Farms, and its predecessor company, Zoria Farms, Inc., subjected its female workers to ongoing sexual abuse, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today.  The Madera, Calif., dried fruit producer also unlawfully fired a class of workers in retaliation for reporting the abuse, the EEOC said.

Abercrombie & Fitch Settles Two Pending EEOC Religious Discrimination Suits

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has agreed to pay $71,000 and to change its policies to settle two separate religious discrimination lawsuits on behalf of Muslim teens wearing hijabs (religious headscarves), the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today.  This settlement follows last week's ruling finding Abercrombie liable for religious discrimination in one case, and an April 2013 ruling dismissing its undue hardship claims in the other suit.

EEOC Sues Dart Energy and J&R Well Services for Race / National Origin Discrimination, Retaliation

A Michigan-based energy company and its Wyoming subsidiary violated federal law against race and national origin harassment and retaliation, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed yesterday.  The EEOC charged that Dart Energy Corp., headquartered in Mason, Mich., and its subsidiary J&R Well Services, LLC, which operates an oil and gas well service business in Wyoming, created a hostile work environment for a group of black, Hispanic and Native American employees.  Further, the EEOC said, the companies fired some of these employees because of their race/national origin and/or because they complained about the discrimination.

Abercrombie & Fitch Liable for Religious Discrimination in EEOC Suit, Court Says

A federal judge has found clothing giant Abercrombie & Fitch liable for religious discrimination when it fired Muslim employee Umme-Hani Khan for wearing her hijab (religious headscarf), the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today.  The ruling came in an employment discrimination lawsuit filed by the federal agency in which Khan intervened.

EEOC's Philadelphia District Office and Mexican Consulate Sign Historic Outreach Agreement

The Philadelphia District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia today.  The agreement establishes an ongoing collaborative relationship between these two entities to provide Mexican nationals with information, guidance, and access to resources on the prevention of discrimination in the workplace, regardless of documentation status.  Mexican Consul Carlos I. Giralt Cabrales and Spencer H. Lewis, Jr., director of the EEOC's Philadelphia District Office, signed the agreement.
