EEOC ANNOUNCES PILOT PROJECTS TO TEST FOR EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that it has entered into contracts with the Fair Employment Council of Greater Washington, D.C., and the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago to conduct pilot projects to study the use of employment "testers" to detect hiring discrimination. The localities in which the pilots will be conducted have not yet been selected.

EEOC AND U S WEST COMMUNICATIONS RESOLVE CASE THROUGH MEDIATION

MILWAUKEE -- Highlighting the success of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's new mediation program, the EEOC and U S WEST Communications today announced a settlement agreement involving the innovative new mediation process and a third-party mediator to reach a mutually agreeable resolution of a disability discrimination claim dating back to 1993 that affected 27 people.

INTERNAL EEOC WORKING GROUP MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGES IN THE FEDERAL SECTOR COMPLAINT PROCESS

EEOC RELEASES POLICY STATEMENT ON MANDATORY BINDING ARBITRATION

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today issued the Policy Statement on Mandatory Binding Arbitration of Employment Discrimination Disputes as a Condition of Employment, supporting its position that agreements that mandate binding arbitration of discrimination claims as a condition of employment are contrary to the fundamental principles of employment discrimination laws. EEOC ISSUES GUIDANCE ON THE USE OF WAIVERS

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has issued policy guidance clarifying that the right of an individual to file a charge of employment discrimination with the Commission cannot be waived. The guidance also states that an individual's right to testify, assist, or participate in a Commission proceeding cannot be waived.

EEOC ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF NEW TASK FORCES

EEOC OBTAINS $5.5 MILLION IN AN ADA CASE AGAINST COMPLETE AUTO TRANSIT

DETROIT -- A Detroit Federal Court Jury awarded an unprecedented $5.5 million in damages in an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) case brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)—the largest amount awarded to date in an ADA case. The lawsuit claimed that Complete Auto Transit discriminated against Thomas Lewis because of his disability (epilepsy).

STATEMENT BY EEOC CHAIRMAN GILBERT CASELLAS ON PROPOSED SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT WITH TEXACO

The proposed settlement agreement filed today by EEOC and Texaco, Inc. resolves the Commission's concerns that the public interest is fully addressed and that mechanisms are in place to ensure Texaco's future compliance with Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. We are pleased with Texaco's efforts in this regard and are hopeful that its agreement with private plaintiffs will soon be approved by the court.

EEOC AND MARTIN MARIETTA (LOCKHEED MARTIN) SETTLE MAJOR CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

DENVER -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Martin Marietta Corporation, now Lockheed Martin, have agreed to settle a lawsuit filed under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). EEOC ANNOUNCES INTERVENTION IN TEXACO, INC. LAWSUIT

Washington -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today filed a motion to intervene in the private employment discrimination lawsuit pending against TEXACO, Inc.
