Family Video to Pay $70,000 to Settle EEOC Disability Discrimination Suit

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today filed a consent decree resolving a disability discrimination lawsuit brought against Family Video Movie Club, Inc., known as Family Video, a Glenview, Ill.-based retailer of movies and games.  Family Video is the largest privately-owned movie and game retailer in the United States and operates more than 735 Family Video stores in 19 states with more than 7,000 employees.

Convergys Customer Management Group, a subsidiary of the Cincinnati-based Convergys Corp., a global provider of customer management services, will pay $15,000 and furnish other relief to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the EEOC announced today.  The EEOC charged Convergys with violating federal law by refusing to hire a call center job applicant who could not work on Saturdays due to his religious beliefs.

Magnuson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

Weatherford, Texas-based Hobson Air Conditioning, Inc. has settled a sexual harassment and constructive discharge lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) the day before the case was to be presented to a jury, the federal agency announced today.  The settlement pays the discrimination victim in this case $37,500 and provides extensive injunctive relief to prevent future unlawful conduct.

EEOC Wins Jury Award from Phoenix Subway Franchisee for Pregnancy Discrimination

In a legal victory for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), an Arizona federal jury returned a verdict for punitive damages against High Speed Enterprise, Inc., a corporation that owns five Phoenix-area Subway fast-food restaurant franchises. Federal District Court Judge Roslyn O. Silver had previously ruled that a central Phoenix Subway violated federal law when it refused to hire a job applicant solely because she was pregnant. Thursday, January 26, 2012, the Phoenix jury of seven -- five men and two women -- returned a unanimous verdict finding that Belinda Murillo, the job applicant, was entitled to punitive damages. The jury awarded $7,280 in punitive damages to Belinda Murillo. The court will now decide back pay damages and injunctive relief.
