EEOC DEVELOPS SMALL BUSINESS FACT SHEET FOR ITS INTERNET WEB SITE

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

PRESS RELEASE
10-16-97

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced today that its Internet home page now includes a small business information fact sheet highlighting select issues of particular interest to small businesses. The new fact sheet can be found by clicking on "Facts About Employment Discrimination" under the EEOC's home page on the World Wide Web at http://www.eeoc.gov

"The small business addition to EEOC's home page addresses the shared concerns of thousands of small employers," said EEOC Chairman Gilbert F. Casellas. "Providing quick and easy access to information about our laws and procedures will go a long way toward helping small businesses resolve employment discrimination disputes before they arise."

Information contained on the fact sheet includes which employers are covered by EEOC-enforced laws, how employees are counted for coverage purposes, recordkeeping and reporting requirements, charge processing procedures, mediation, and a variety of substantive issues of concern to small employers. Also included is information on EEOC's technical assistance program and EEOC publications.

EEOC enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act; the Equal Pay Act; the Americans with Disabilities Act, which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in the private sector and state and local governments; the Rehabilitation Act's prohibitions against disability discrimination in the federal government; and sections of the Civil Rights Act of 1991.
